Chapter No. 9: Carbon Compounds,

What are the differences between saturated hydrocarbons and unsaturated hydrocarbons?

Ans.

Saturated Hydrocarbons
Unsaturated Hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons with the carbon atoms linked to each other by single bonds are called saturated hydrocarbons.
Hydrocarbons with one or more carbon - carbon double or triple bonds are called unsaturated hydrocarbons.
When saturated hydrocarbons are burned, they give a clean blue flame.
Whey unsaturated hydrocarbons are burned, they give a yellow flame with lots of black smoke.
Saturated hydrocarbons do not decolourize bromine or tincture of iodine solutions.
Unsaturated hydrocarbons decolourize bromine or tincture of iodine solutions.
Saturated hydrocarbons are less reactive.
Unsaturated hydrocarbons are usually highly reactive.
