TOO ERR IS HUMAN, TO FORGIVE DIVINE
In one of Shakespeare’s plays , a characters
says , “The quality of mercy is divine “ . Indeed to able to forget the evil
that others have done to you and to forgive them is divine . Jesus Christ ,even
on the cross , during his last moments ,was able to say this about the people
who had put him to death :Father , forgive them for they know not what they are
doing . Load Rama showed no rancor against his stepmother , Kaikeyi, for
sending him into exile for fourteen years so that her son , Bharat , could be
the king .
EMPTY VESSELS MAKE THE MOST SOUND
You
will always find that a person with very little learning loves to jabber all
the while and laugh and joke and make a lot of unnecessary noise .This is
because the person doesn’t really have any substantial matter in the head and
so hides this fact with a lot of meaningless chatter . But the person of real
substance looks around , observes and when he or she speaks ,it is to say
something really meaningful .that is what is meant by this proverb .
Hence
when we are in a conversation we should only take a fair share of the
conversation and not keep prattling on as if no one else is there . This will
show that we respect other people’s
opinions and wish to hear them out too
.It would also send out the message that we are not superficial people
who bore others with our pompous talk .

ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD
Everything
in life that appears to be attractive does not necessarily have great value . so
judging by appearances can be misleading . This same fact can be said in
another way : A book cannot be judged by its cover . A book with a very
attractive cover may not have readable material inside . On the other hand , a
book with a very dull cover may be very interesting . This is true of almost
everything in life . A show that is well
advertised may be dull and boring . And a movie that has received very little
publicity may be quite entertaining
.
So
we must not jump to conclusions about the merits or demerits or anything purely
on the basis of the way it is packaged . this is the age of advertisement .Makers
of products try to show their products in the best light so that people will
buy them . But this does not necessarily mean that the product is well worth
the money .even when we judge people we should not do so by their looks . We
must not get swayed by their flashy styles or dashing ways .Gandhiji wore just
a dhoti , but he is still held in great reverence throughout the world .
Abraham Lincoln was not endowed with good looks . But he is considered by far
the greatest American president . Mother Teresa had a very simple appearance . But
people all over the world remember and revere her . So it is only fair to say
that all that glitters is not gold .
A ROLLING STONE GATHERS NO MOSS
It is not good to keep on changing your place
of residence or workplace or routine . Such a habit causes a lot of insecurity
and instability .Besides , it takes time to get adjusted to a new place or in a
new job .A person who change his home or job frequently loses much precious
time this way . When you stay in one place for a long time , you get
familiarized with your surroundings and are able to go about your work with
ease and precision . Also people around know and recognize you and so you get
the help required when necessary .
A
person who keeps on changing his regular schedule frequently is known as a
rolling stone . He or she cannot cultivate any friendships or relationships .
Frequent changes of jobs and homes also affects one’s financial prospects
negatively . He or she will not get people to help him or her when he or she is
in trouble , because no one will know him or her well enough .
Hence
it is better to stay in one place and keep a steady job . thus we can reap the
benefits of continuity and stability . This is greatly preferable to changing
our location or job every now and then .
A THING OF BEAUTY IS A JOY FOREVER
Life
presents us with many beautiful things .This may be a beautiful scene or a
flower or a lonely night walk on a beach or a beautiful picture that fills us
with peace . We must preserve these pretty memories in our minds . When we are
not feeling so good , or are lonely or depressed we should recall these
beautiful sights or experiences . this will make us happy .
William
Wordsworth has illustrated this idea beautifully in his poem ‘Daffodils’ Once
he saw a sight of beautiful golden
daffodils . This sight remained with him throughout his life . In later years ,
whenever he was in a vacant or pensive mood , he recollected the scene of the
daffodils . this filled him a great sense of peace and his heart warmed with
pleasure .
Life
is full of simple , beautiful things . It is for use them to our advantage .We
don’t have to spend money on luxurious holidays and expensive pastimes to find
happiness . We can do so with simple memories that we have collected during the
good times of our lives , when we have experienced beautiful things . Because such experiences
will never be erased from our memories .
STRIKE WHILE THE IRON IS HOT OR MAKE HAY WHILE THE SUN SHINE
When
life presents opportunities we must seize them and not let them go . Everyone
in their lifetime gets some chances to move ahead . Each big change is a
godsend and we must seize it move forward in life . something or the other or
some person makes it easy for us to get in life . That is what the proverb
means .
We
must strike while the iron is hot . In other words ,we must make hay while the
sun is shining . In any sport , the winner is the one who looks for
opportunities to overcome his opponents by taking advantage of his weakness .
It is also true that once we miss that
opportunity it may never come our way again . And then we will live all our
life to regret the missed chance .We must also put in our own efforts . But never
lose out on the chance that comes our way . When an opportunity presents itself
we must seize it and use it to go further in life . Then only can we be
successful .
BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER
We
must have all seen that birds of the same kind move about in groups and even
fly together in groups . In the same way , people who are similar in nature ,
and have the same hobbies , preferences or interests , are always found
together . they like to spend time discussing their experiences and common pursuits
. This is what is meant by the proverb , ‘Birds of a feather flock together ‘ .
People have a natural tendency to seek out
like – minded people . It is human nature to do so . Sports - persons feel
comfortable in the company of other sports - persons . An artist feels at home
among other artists . This leads us to conclusion that a person must be very careful
about the friends he has , for he will be judged accordingly . If he is in the
company of dishonest people , he too will be considered dishonest . Thus , we
should always remember that we are known by the company we keeps and ensure
that our ‘company ‘ is good .
SPEECH IS SILVER , SILENCE IS GOLDEN
There
is a Biblical proverb , ‘If speech is silver , then silence is golden ‘ . This
proverb implies that silence is a priceless gift . Very often , in conversation
, some people speak non – stop , and say hardly anything of value . Little do
they realize that people , even in company , need silence in order to evaluate
What is going on in their minds .
A
good number of people think that whatever they say is very important and needs
to be listened to . One valuable quality of communication is the ability to be
a good listener .Listening to others is an art . But unfortunately ,sometimes
people just wait for the other person to stop so that they can begin their own
part – which they rehearse while pretending to listen .
To
be silent is to be sensitive to the other person ‘s thoughts and problems . If
you wish your company to be valued by others , sometimes keep quiet , listen
and pay attention while others are speaking . By doing this you will be more
helpful than chattering nineteen to the dozen . There is a beautiful song which has this line : You say it best when
you say nothing all !
WORK IS WORSHIP
Everyone
has to work in order to earn money . However , there are some who think of work
only as a means to earn money , and nothing more . As a result they do not
perform the tasks given to them by their employers with interest . They make
excuses , point an accusing finger at others , blame their tools , criticize
their employers , complain about their colleagues – while they themselves work
in the most inefficient way possible . we must remind such people that ‘Duty is
divine ‘ and ‘work is worship ‘ . Work is a dedication of one’s labour to God .
Work is the use of the inspiration given to us by God to create and carve and
mend and shape .
Work
should be performed with sincerity , dedication and perseverance .This shows
respect for what we do , and for the
others who will benefit by our work . When we perform a task , however simple
it may be , it should be done to the best of our ability . This shows not only
our deep involvement in our actions, but also an expression of our skills . We
must not forget that the first ‘work ‘ ever done was by God – the of Creation .
And look how beautiful His ‘Works’ are !
A LITTLE LEARNING IS A DANGEROUS THING
We
have heard of ‘ quacks ‘ in the villages who try to cure serious diseases by
their so called magical remedies . This is an example of a little learning a
being a dangerous thing . Finally when the patient dies they shift the blame to
some supernatural power and wash their hands of the tragedy .
Sometimes
children try to imitate dangerous scenes form films , realizing the harm that
they can cause to themselves or others .Likewise , learning Yoga from someone who
is not an expert in the art could be dangerous . Some people try to repair
domestic appliances on their own thinking that they can do the job themselves .
Lacking sufficient knowledge ,they only spoil the appliance . They would do well to call a technician to do the
job.
Listening
to the advice of someone who is less educated than you can result in your
making wrong choices in life . Remember Lord Buddha’s teaching : Travel not
with a fool . He further goes on to say that if the people you are travelling
with are less clever than you or equal in cleverness to you , it is better to
travel alone . In other words , it is better to have no friends that to have
one who has little knowledge .
THE WORLD HAS ENOUGH FOR EVERY MAN’S NEED , BUT NOT FOR EVERY MAN’S GREED
God created this
world with enough natural resources to fulfill the needs of every single person
. Yet there are some who , driven by greed , wish to acquire land and property
beyond imaginable bounds . As a result hundreds of thousands of
common people are deprived people to indulge in lavish lifestyle when the rest
of the population lives amidst grinding poverty .
The world has been
created for each and every human being alive . It is capable of providing land
, food and raw material for clothing for everyone ! The world surely be a
better place if everyone opted for a simple and healthy lifestyle . However ,
we see all around us the mad rush for material possessions . Humans , greedily
and selfishly , have been over – exploiting the natural resources over the
years .
The need of the
hour is to balance materialism and over consumption with an awareness of the
needs of others . Gandhiji spent his entire life working for the poor and the
downtrodden and set an example by living a simple life . He tried to prove
through his actions the truth of his words . ‘The world has enough for every
man ‘s need , but not for every man’s greed ‘ . If only more leaders were like
him !
NOTHING SUCCEEDS LIKE SUCCESS
Sweet
is the taste of success . The more you get , the more you want . The more you
want , the money you try . it is like setting in motion a self – propelling
machine ;it keeps on going by its own acceleration .
But where should it all
begin ? Of course , the success story must being at the beginning . Success in
early ventures raises our belief in ourselves . We begin to have confidence in
ourselves . And that makes the all important difference .
For a student , the
first important success story begins with the SSC exam . If he or she proves to
be a great successes in it , there is every possibility that he or she will
enjoy a long series of successes in the years to come .
So it essential to bring home the first success by due effort . This success will bring in more success . for nothing succeeds like success !
A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE
This
proverb advises us to be prudent . Timely action often prevents some great loss
or harm that could occur in the future . If there is a small rent in your
garment , you would be wise to put in some timely stitches . If you let it be
and put off the repair of the garment , the rent will turn into a large hole and
finally , the garment will become absolutely useless and impossible to wear .
If a crack in the embankment of a river is not repaired in time , the water
will keep on seeping through , the crack will widen and might even result in
large – scale flooding .
It
is the same with all situation affecting humans and their actions . As soon as
one observes that something is wrong ,one
should take immediate steps to rectify the situation . If one sits by and dose
nothing , the situation will worsen and then might turn so bad that massive efforts
will have to be taken in order to put the situation right .
As Benjamin Franklin has
said , “Never leave till tomorrow what you can do today .” The simple problem
that you leave untackled today will
develop into a situation that might require enormous efforts to deal with tomorrow
. Tackle the problem as soon as you see it . It will save you plenty of time ,
money , misery and heartburn in the future .
PRIDE GOES BEFORE A FALL
Everyone
knows the story about the deer who was proud of his beautiful horns and ashamed
of his lean legs . However , when the deer was in danger , it was his legs that
helped him run swiftly . His horns , that he was so proud of , got entangled in
the branches and led to his death . Pride had brought about his fall !
It
is not right to be proud of what we posses . If we have skills , we should
quietly use them for our progress and in the service of others . If we are
excessively proud of what we won , the
very things we brag about will bring about our downfall .
In the final reckoning , nothing in
this world belongs to us . So what makes us so proud ?
Whatever
wealth we accumulate during our lifetime should be used for the benefit of
others The tree in the forest is not proud of its
products . Instead it freely gives its produce to the birds , the animals ,
the insects and man . It is only man who is vain , who loves to boast and show
off his worldly possessions
to others . Ultimately , however , he has to leave everything behind , while
his body is left to burn or decay . To be proud is to be foolish
. o be humble is to be wise .
GOD MADE THE COUNTRY AND MAN MADE THE TOWN
Artificial
, man – made objects can never be as beautiful as the works of nature . God made the fields , the birds ,
the mountains , the rivers , the valleys . What did man do ? He only made the
buildings that sit on God’s creation .
Take
a look at our cities : the creation of man . They are ugly manifestation of
hustle and bustle , hurry and flurry and a mechanical lifestyle . They are the
cause of noise and pollution . Wherever man has established human settlements ,
he has brought with it innumerable problems . And what is worse , in order to
construct his so called creations , he does away with all the elements of
nature that make life so beautiful . Man fills his surroundings with stone and
cement and dirt and smoke , creating massive concrete jungles , and tarred four
– lane highways .
On
the other hand , the country side provides soothing silence or the pleasant
noises of nature, fresh air , wholesome and nourishing food , simplicity ,
happiness and contentment . In fact , it is only the simple rural folk who know
what true labour is , what true appetite
is , what true satisfaction is , and what sound sleep really is . This is
because they are in harmony with their environment . They have not interfered
with God’s creations and , as a result , enjoy the simple gifts of nature .
Blessed
indeed are they who live in the midst of surroundings created by God !
PROCRASTINATION IS THE THIEF OF TIME
It
has been said , ‘Never put off for tomorrow what you can do today ‘ . Work does
not disappear if we postpone it . Once day or the other it has done . The more
we postpone doing something , the more the work piles up . Finally when we do
tackle the work , the amount seems too much . We then have to spend hours
working under great strain and stress . Very often , we end up completing the
work in a shoddy manner .It might also happen that the work may never get done
, just because we delayed doing it when it was required to be done .
Sometimes
a very heavy price has be paid for delaying things . The person who delays
insuring his house will regret it when it is gutted by a sudden fire . putting
off the treatment of a disease may make it worse , and many even result in
death . the student who goes on postponing studies will need to burn the
midnight oil for last minute preparations before the examination . And even
then , he or she may not have time enough to cover the entire portion .
When some work is delayed , the time which
would have profitably used is wasted . time wasted is time lost forever . putting things off robs us of the
opportunity of doing things . Hence procrastination , in this proverb , is
referred to as a ‘thief of time ‘ . It is a proverb that we would do well to
remember at all times , for it warns us against the dangers of delay in action
, and stresses the importance of timely action .
ONE GOOD TURN DESERVES ANOTHER
When someone does
you a good deed , you must never forget it . On the contrary , you must look
out for the opportunity to do something
good for that person or to someone else . This latter is called ‘paying
it forward’ Good must beget good . then only will this world become a better
place to live in .
Very often we are
so selfish that we think that if someone does something good for us , we are entitled to it . Many
people behave that way . They do not even have the courtesy to say ‘ that you
‘.
I remember , once I
was in my building when the light went off . I was terrified . There was an
elderly person in the lift with me . He calmed me down and told me not to worry
; in a few minutes the lift would re – start . Then when the lift began working
, he accompanied me to the door of my flat. I was grateful for his comforting
presence and thanked him . A few days later , near the parking lot of our
building , I was the grandchild of the
same gentleman playing with other children . suddenly a car came up and I could
see that the child was in danger . I ran up to the child , lifted him safely
away . The elder gentleman , who had once helped me , came up to me and thanked
me . I felt that the elderly man had , in fact , earned my act of helpfulness ,
because he had himself been helpful to me earlier .
There is a
wonderful poem about a man who helps an old woman across the street . the woman
blesses him for helping her . At the end of the poem the man expresses the
found hope that someday , some young man like himself will help his mother when
she is in trouble .
Indeed , one should
never hesitate to do good for others .
For one good truth
deserves another !
HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY
Corruption has
spread through India like an epidemic . At every twist and turn you meet people
who are willing to do anything dishonest in order to earn money .Dishonesty in
words and deeds is so common now that people have almost accepted it as a rule
rather than an exception .An honest person is a bit of an oddity in present day
India . Isn’t that a rather sad state of affairs ?
We all know from
our experience that a lie will lead to another ten ; a misdeed may need another
ten misdeeds to cover it up .Still we tell lies and do wrong things .
Every religion
tells us that we must be honest . No one likes dishonest people because they cannot
be trusted .The truth is always so simple . Dishonesty is like a whirlpool from
which escape is difficult . Sometimes we are punished for being honest , but it
is nothing compared to the pain and suffering that we cause to other due to our
dishonesty.
.
Gandhiji laid great
emphasis on the need for truthfulness in words and deeds . His life throughout
was a struggle to uphold the virtue of truth . A truthful person can speak and
act with moral conviction . He command respect and reverence in society . Such
people are necessary in the world today
.
INDUSTRY IS THE MOTHER OF PROSPERITY
There is a Sanskrit
verse that says that animals do not enter the mouth of a sleeping lion on their
own .The lion has to go hunt them . Otherwise it will starve and finally die .
The word ‘industry ‘ in the given proverb refers to the quality of working hard
regularly . So what the proverb means is that hard work is the key to success .
A farmer has to
toil under extreme conditions in his field . Only then can he hope to harvest bumper
crops . Labourers in a factory have to work efficiently in order to manufacture
the goods that , when sold , will reap benefits for all . All prosperous
nations have come up by the unfailing and dedicated efforts of their people . there
is , indeed , no substitute for hard work .no short cut to prosperity . It can
come only through industry or hard work . In this sense , then , industry is ,
indeed , the mother of prosperity .
Good things in life do not just fall
into our laps . The sweet fruit of success has to be earned by the sweat of
one’s brow . No Tata or Birla or Ambani ever reached where they are by sitting
in an easy chair relaxing . Sachin Tendulkar plays well not by mere instinct .
Behind his brilliant performance lies a lot of hard work and hours of practice sessions
on the field . Actors do not become successful merely on the strength of their
looks or physical appearance . They sweat it out in front of the strength of
their looks or take before they finally appear on the screen and charm the
public .
EXAMPLE IS BETTER THAN PRECEPT
PRACTICE WHAT YOU PREACH
ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS
All of us born
preaches . But when it comes to practising what we preach , we find excuses
.Just telling someone what to do or how to behave is not enough . Behaving the
way that one wants others to behave has a more powerful effect . Telling others
what to do and not doing it oneself is absolute hypocrisy .
Children are keen
observers . They quickly observe the gulf between the speech of adults and
their actual behavior , between their words and deeds , between their preaching
and practice . They are influenced more by the actions of their elders than by
their words . They imitate their action and inculcate their habits .
Gandhiji wanted to
impress upon the villagers the importance
of cleanliness . Whenever he visited a village , he would taken a broom in his
hand and sweep the streets .His action hand more effect than any speech he might
have given . A father who smoke cannot scold his child when he finds him (the
child) smoking . If he wants his child never to start the habit of smoking , he
should first give up smoking himself . If parents want their children to pick
up good manners ,they should themselves be models of good behavior . In short ,
we should ourselves do what we want others to do . This is because actions
speak louder than words . An ounce of example is worth much more than a ton of
precept .
